Fantasy General Gift Code

I don’t know what to do with this GOG gift code for Fantasy General. So here is the link for anyone to claim the code.

Fantasy General Gift Code

In the words from GOG, “Redeem this code to add Fantasy General to your library. Act fast, it will expire on 17 January, 2019 at 23:59:59 UTC. “

While I am at it, here are two other gift codes that no one seems to want.

System Shock 2

The Witcher: Enhanced Edition

GameSessions

GameSessions is a digital distribution platform that encourages trying before buying. Their platform allows you to download and play full games for a limited time trial. If you are happy with the games, you can buy Steam keys from them.

The best thing about GameSessions is they seem to have regular game giveaways. Be wary as it is not as simple as getting a DRM-free download or a Steam Key. Here is what you need to know.

A GameSessions giveaway allows you to play a game without a time limit. However, the game is tied to your GameSessions account and it is a GameSessions version of the game.

Being a GameSessions version means two things:
1) Multiplayer systems that uses Steam or other platforms does not work in a GameSessions game.
2) A special game launcher is used to start the game and this launcher requires an “always-on” connection to the GameSessions servers. If the server connection is severed, the game stops. Note, I did manage to play for a couple of minutes after an Internet connection drop-out.

A special installer must downloaded to download the game. The installer cannot resume downloads if it is closed. So, if you need to reboot or the PC crashes, the download will have to start from scratch. The installer can pause and resume downloads if it is kept open.

A GameSessions tray applet/icon/thing loads when Windows boots and there is no option to stop this. If you don’t want it taking up space unnecessarily, you must disable the startup manually in the Task Manager. Regardless of the tray thing, there is always a GameSessions Hub Service that loads. I think this is required for installed games to run. To start a game without the tray icon, just run the shortcut installed on the Desktop or the Start Menu.

When playing a game, sometimes a little message pops-up in the bottom right corner. So far, I have only seen GameSessions messages, but I guess it could display ads too.

When you exit a game, a window pops-up advertising for GameSessions.

Recording videos or taking screen shots may be a problem as GameSessions games crash when utilities like Fraps or Bandicam are running. Luckily, I have not had any problems with GeForce Experience recording video.

If you can tolerate all of the above, then GameSessions makes for another fine way to acquire free games.

Trying out games is not bad either, but it is not all pros and no cons over having a demo version of a game. Some games cannot be trialled properly within the given time limit and some demos are smaller to download. It is still an option though and can be handy.

My Win10 PC

Windows 10 Home 64-bit

8GB RAM

Intel Core i7-6700HQ @ 2.6GHz

Intel HD Graphics 530 / nVidia GeForce GTX 960M 2GB VRAM

Conexant SmartAudio HD / Logitech G35

This is my current PC.  Just need a post where all the info is in one place for other articles to refer to.  I wonder how many times I will say “this is my current PC” as time passes.

10% Humble Store Discount

Here is a link for 10% Humble Store discount.  I don’t know the specific conditions, but the words from Humble are “enjoy 10% off for 30 days” and “One giftee per month”.   So, first in, best dressed and I hope someone finds this useful.

If anyone would like to be generous and wants to subscribe to the Humble Monthly, following this referral link will put $8 in my Humble wallet. Thank you.

Game Rankings Return

The game rankings is alive again.  With that comes the game comparer as well.   They are ugly and not the simplest to use, but all the functionality is there.

All my old game reviews must be restored before the thumbnails and links can work.  Then I have to figure out how to integrate it with WordPress properly and make it easier to use.

Rolling Back Rolling Reviews

Rolling reviews are not working.  Each thought can be added to an overall review quickly, but sometimes there are multiple points that must go together. Unfortunately, these points can be thought up at different times and this simply disrupts the flow of already posted thoughts.  After two games, it is back to the normal review process.

Rolling Reviews

Time to get back to reviewing games (since I already play them) .  Time is also the issue.  Just don’t have the time to play the games enough to write full reviews in good time.  Let’s try rolling reviews.  As I play I will write whatever comes to mind at that time for that thing.  Over time it will build up to be a complete review anyway.

Another plus for the rolling review is, years later I may return to a game and find something new and update the review.  Games get updates, why not game reviews too?

The framework is ready.  I just hope this site holds together as I have overloaded the standard WordPress stuff in every way imaginable.

My old reviews from the Posidyn Games Information Base will also be returning, albeit in a very bare bones form.

Change Table Prefix on WP Install

When installing WordPress it is a good idea to change the default table prefix “wp_” to something else.  It may not help with security that much, but there is no harm in making the quick change.

Don’t make the same mistake I did.  Changing the table prefix after installation is very complicated.  Well, complicated to me anyway.

Here is an article with a good following discussion about the default table prefix – https://www.wordfence.com/blog/2016/12/wordpress-table-prefix/

And here is a view from the other side of “the fence” – https://www.whitefirdesign.com/blog/2017/01/03/wordfence-spreads-falsehood-on-database-prefix-security-hardening-to-push-their-plugin/

Bookmarks Anywhere is Back

Bookmarks Anywhere now live at
https://posidyn.com/ba/

Bookmarks Anywhere is a little tool that stores bookmarks that can be accessed from any browser. It even works on Lynx, but you need the version that can access HTTPS and it gives the error message “SSL error:Can’t find common name in certificate-Continue?”. It still works, though.

I did not make Bookmarks Anywhere for Lynx, though. Instead, it was made for the Kindle e-reader. Sometimes, I just want to read certain pages on a Kindle. This tool makes it easier to do so. No app required. Everything is done through a browser. Just log in and go.

As much as I have tried to make Bookmarks Anywhere as safe and reliable as possible, it is still a “use at your own risk” tool.

Although Bookmarks Anywhere does not look anything like the rest of posidyn.com, the tool still requires cookies to work properly.

Just to be clear, there is one advertisement at the bottom of the bookmarks list page.

To keep things tidy, accounts that have not been accessed for one year will be deleted.

Reincarnation

This is the second reincarnation of my website. My first website was very simple and hosted on my ISP’s free space. Due to incorrectly redirecting and the ISP not removing the content, two pages are still accessible from the web.

The first reincarnation was Posidyn Games Information Base. This site was much more complex with a game comparing and ranking system as well as reviews written by me. I made a mess of the site and had to stop PGIB for lack of time. In recent months though, I came to realise that I still need a website for some upcoming… stuff. Lo and behold, the second reincarnation – Posidyn’s Site O’ Stuff.

The memory of the PGIB life will return eventually. There is no way I can build a website and not include games in it! But this time there is more stuff. The site design is not complete. In fact, it has only just started and this is just one of the stuff I will write about. While I learn and build, might as well write about it too.  Posidyn’s Site O’ Stuff is as much a reincarnation of a website as it is an evolution of a self.

There will be ads and affiliate links on this site. Any support is kindly appreciated.

Who reads this stuff anyway? There is a Thai phrase that I learned from a monk and it is very appropriate to answer this question. Chaang maan ter.
